As one of the first bits of infrastructure chopped away to allow the new direction I am nonetheless sad that the paper has come to this pass. I am at least twice weekly in the neighborhood of the new edifice and frequently see former colleagues who still cling to the remnants. I question the statement that the leaders are "a proven team of mavericks ... suited to bring about the necessary changes." That team has pared the wood-fibre product down to a pitiful reminder of better times, and the newly remade website is considerably less useful that the previous version.

I deliver flowers to the new Columbian building a couple times a week and note that most of the expensive space is vacant. AHA thinly occupies most of the sixth floor but there is not much sign of any other tenancy. My liberal friends are lately passing an urban legend that the paper is furiously trying to hype circulation in an effort to sell the paper to some chain. That line was active on and off for decades. A city council member shared it with me in hush-hush confidence the week I started working for the Campbell family in November 1975.

The editorial assistant did call him more than once, but short of checking drivers licenses there's not much one can do but trust that people are who they say they are.

Your paper was foolish for not verifying the identify of its letter writer(s). A simple I.D. check would have fulfilled that purpose.

p.s.: "Who said that consolidation would lead to ignoring of local news? Not me, sir." That's a quote from the aforementioned Mr. Pearlstein, defending his column in which he called on papers to replace local news with global news.

So I guess my post is wrong. <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/discussion/2008/04/15/DI2008041501442.html rel="nofollow">Read more of Mr. Pearlstein's spin-doctoring in this item from the Post website</a>, in which he also talks about how newspaper websites are really newspapers. Oh, doctor, is my head spinning.

So let's see ... if I started a newspaper based on this website, I guess that newspaper would really be a website ...

I probably should retract this post. Upon further reflection, I realize we're talking about newspaper executives here. If they HAD bought eBay, Google and Yahoo, the internet would be obsolete now.
